1- make-up comes first
it’s impossible for me to see whether an outfit will work until i’ve done my hair and make-up. it’s psychological.

2- heed the words of coco
when it comes to accessorising, i follow coco chanel’s advice – “always take one item off”.

3- don’t confuse sexy with flirty
for me, feeling sexy if actually about power, not femininity. for that, i pick out structured clothing with strong, masculine lines.

4- keep references focused
i like to reference particular looks or eras. to look boyish, i channel 1960s mods and wear brogues and a little tank top.

5- be inspired by your mother
my mother was an extremely good clotheshorse – as a child i spent hours running around in her 1960s dresses and tiaras.

6- on the dance floor, go flat
leather-soled brogues are essential for a great night of dancing.

7- you deserve the best
i don’t often wear high-street clothes but that’s because i don’t come from a posh background and i refuse to stop aspiring.

8- embrace the men’s department
menswear can make for a really avant-garde daywear look.

9- spend your money wisely
invest in clothes by designers who also create couture collections, such as Dior and Givenchy. the time they spend on research and development is reflected in their mainline collections.

10- take a history lesson
learn about vintage and you will understand today’s trends.
